Easily the D40, but is a DSLR is all depend on the lense, but just about any decent lens is better than the one in IS S3. S3 is a point and shoot, and is limited to its small camera sensor, and lens is limited. Also in night shot D40 will easily provided better image and no flash mode in D40 is easily better than S3 no flash.Which has better clear image quality?
The Nikon D40 ... it has a much large sensor. It also has the advantage of using interchangeable lenses.
