It's most likely your webcam hardware. Most typical webcams use CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensors. Each pixel has a charge-to-voltage conversion, which decreases the uniformity of each pixel and limits light capturing, which leads to a slightly distorted picture.

A webcam like the iSight (on Macs) and some other high end ones use a technology called CCD (Charged Coupled Device). The causes the picture to come out in an analog form, with each pixel being devoted to light capture, which therefor makes the pixels have more uniformity. This produces amazing pictures, but still at a low resolution.

Most webcams on average produce pictures at 640x480, and trying to blow them up to a larger size will cause more distortion to the picture. For example, blowing them up to a size that will fit the desktop background.

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the hardware on your camera. And your only solution to this problem is to buy a webcam that has CCD technology inside of it, or buy a higher end CMOS webcam that produces a higher resolution and clearer quality.

Hope this helps.
